Crewmember

Removed After Being Implemented

This design document was once implemented, but has since been removed from Ephemeral Space.

The following reason was given for its removal: "Rolling crewmember always felt abjectly terrible compared to the myriad of other basic low-impact crew roles in the game. Other roles fill a similar purpose of being highly-ambiguous while not strongly driving the round. Also as an side, fake-claiming crewmember was always horrifically ass and basically was never done. Other roles like vandal serve that niche way better since they offer plausible deniability for evil-ish actions rather than just being a word to throw out."

Name: Crewmember

Organization: Crew

Archetypes: Dud

Description: Serve as the platonic ideal of the crew.

Objectives: None.

Masquerade notes: Should be assigned with increasing frequency as player population goes up.

I'm the crewmember. What do you mean I'm "fake claiming?" What does that even mean??

Concept

The crewmember is the baseline member of the crew organization and serves as a default secret identity for the game.

Abilities

The crewmember has no special abilities.

Gameplay

As a baseline role, the crewmember is the most "safe" to other players but is simultaneously the easiest secret identity to pretend to be. Since there is almost certainly a crewmember at any population level, pretending to be one is almost certainly a safe claim that cannot be immediately disproven.

As a game piece, the secret identity highlights the best element of the crew organization: ambiguity. There's no clear way to sus out what a crewmember really is, so they become a constant question mark. Are they really who they say they are, or are they just a traitor lying low?
